Dance like a Roomba workshop with Nic Chang

March 20, 2020

Sunday March 22 1-3 on Zoom https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/3145166276

Presented by the Bay Area Disabled Dance Collective

If a Roomba can dance, anybody can dance! In this workshop, Nic Chang explores the relationship between disability and cybernetics in dance. How does a Roomba, the robotic vacuum, dance? Dance aesthetics are often based on the movement of the spine. In fact, research found that the more a robot can mimic the flexibility of a spine the greater the perception of the fluidity or danciness of the robot. However, this research does not explain the grace of a dancing Roomba! Nic explores how dancing like a Roomba may open opportunities for subverting ableist dance aesthetics. Workshop will include exercises in breathing, happy dancing, tongue dance, and locating a personal rhythm independent of music.

Nic is a Peace and Conflict studies student and a member of the Berkeley Free Clinic’s Street Medicine Team and Trans Health Collective. He identifies as queer Wobbly.

All are welcome and no dance experience is necessary. Please contact BADD at disableddancecollective@gmail.com with access needs and questions.

The Bay Area Disabled Dance Collective (BADD) is an all-disabled multiracial collective of queer and trans dancers, that centers the leadership of disabled QTPOC (queer and trans people of color). Our goals are to support disabled dance through education, performance, and activism. Our teaching workshop series creates pedagogical opportunities for teacher development, while giving students opportunities to learn through diverse teaching styles and methods. There are dramatically few programs that provide dance training for disabled bodies. This access to education is essential for cultivating a diverse, vibrant, and equitable dance community in the Bay and beyond. The remaining workshops in BADD’s teaching series will be virtual on the following dates from 1-4 pm  Berkeley:4/19, 5/17, 6/14.
