“Beyond the Frame: Amplifying Disability Stories” is an accessible film event where a series of short films highlighting disability issues are screened, followed by a panel and audience discussion. All films are played with open captions and open audio description. Everyone is more than welcome.
Beyond the Frame started with the first event in August 2024, which featured three films, including a feature-length film, “Baldy for the Blind,” which documented a group of visually impaired hikers attempting to summit Mount Baldy, the highest peak in LA at a height of 10,064 feet.
Following the screening, the panel discussion focuses on the featured films and other disability issues, before opening the mic to our audience to ask questions or make comments. Previous panelists have included the director and stars from “Baldy for the Blind,” an organizer of Superfest (the longest running disability film festival in the world), the Home Entertainment Product Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios, a deafblind educator from Texas, and a Paralympic swimmer.
We've also started working with Pixar to bring the community accessible screenings of some of their new films.
Our next event will be on October 28, 2026 and details are still being discussed. Please sign up above to be kept updated.
We would like to continue to keep this as a free event for people to attend. We rely on your generous donations in order to fund it. If you would like to support us, please Donate to DAC. Any money received will be used to facilitate future events. Costs include venue hire, panelist gifts, audio description of films, and other accessibility costs.
The event is a collaborative effort between Disability Access and Compliance (DAC), the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the Disability Cultural Community Center (DCC) at UC Berkeley.
