Description
This section examines accessibility in University dining and housing.
Recommendations
-
Provide relevant employees training regarding the university’s dining and housing related responsibilities and obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, and all disability-related California statutes, and case law.
-
Ensure that students are aware that they may request reasonable accommodations in student housing at any time during the year, and that they are informed of this in accessible formats.
Students that want to request reasonable accommodation for disability are referred to the ADA Accommodations(link is external) – Housing website. They can also contact the RSSP Disability Specialist by calling 510-642-4108 (711 Ca Relay) or sending an email to: housingaccommodations@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail). -
Ensure that all employees are aware that costs associated with accommodations in student housing cannot be charged to the disabled student who requires them. Any issues or concerns students have about this arrangement can raise them with the RSSP Disability Specialist by calling 510-642-4108 (711 Ca Relay) or sending an email to: housingaccommodations@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail).
-
Confirm that relevant employees know the University’s process for receiving reasonable accommodations requests. (See ADA Accommodations link above and contact information.)
-
Confirm the following key items: communications systems in residential facilities are accessible to disabled people; all accessible exits at residential facilities are clearly marked; all alarms systems at residential facilities are both audible and strobing so that they are accessible to deaf/hard of hearing and blind/visually impaired people; elevator operation and communications systems are accessible to people with disabilities.
- Students can request to create an individual evacuation plan by contacting the DAC and submit a request for an Individual Emergency Evacuation Plan(link is external).
- RSSP building communications systems are confirmed to be accessible.
- All exits in residential facilities are clearly marked.
- Students with disabilities that require strobe alarms are housed in facilities that contain strobe alarms.
- Elevator communications systems are accessible.
Training
Leads should take the training themselves, then assign it to those employees in their unit for whom they believe it is relevant. Assigning to all employees is recommended. Any processes, procedures or protocols recommended for development in the training should be created.
